Iberdrola Ingeniería and GE to collaborate on Lichterfelde combined-cycle plant construction

Iberdrola Ingeniería has awarded GE the supply contract for the installation of a gas turbine at Germany’s Lichterfelde combined-cycle plant.
GE will provide the advanced technology 9F gas turbine which delivers power with high efficiency, availability, reliability and low emissions. In addition, GE will provide operations and long-term maintenance of the turbine.
The Iberdrola Group subsidiary was awarded the several hundred million euros worth contract to complete turnkey construction of Lichterfelde power plant in Germany after winning an international tender launched by Swedish energy company Vattenfall.
Three months earlier than scheduled, IBERDROLA INGENIERÍA has recently begun with the initial work on the deep foundations and the company is installing its temporary offices and deploying its construction team on the site.
The company will be responsible for the project’s entire development, including design, engineering, procurement, construction, assembly and commissioning of the new plant. With its 300 megawatts (MW) electrical capacity (from the 220-MW GE gas turbine plus a 80-MW steam turbine with heat extraction) and 225 MW thermal capacity, the plant will supply Berlin’s Southwest with electricity and district heating.
The new combined-cycle gas turbine power plant will replace an existing thermal power plant operating on the site since 1972. This initiative is an important part of a climate protection agreement, signed by the Senate of Berlin and Vattenfall to reduce carbon emissions and upgrade the utility’s electricity generation facilities.
Over the past few years, GE and Iberdrola Ingeniería have worked together on similar energy generation projects in Spain, Lithuania, Qatar or Algeria. Proof of the excellent relationship between the two was the appointment of Iberdrola Ingeniería as Valued GE Customer.
