Solar Decathlon 2104. Mexico to take part in this competition for the first time

Mexico will for the first time participate in the 2014 Solar Decathlon at the Palace of Versailles, in France. Their project, called CASA, brings together an interdisciplinary group of students as well as support from researchers from renewable energies and engineering institutes, amongst others. CASA aims to be a resilient, symbiotic and regenerative solution for the housing problems in the Valle de México’s metropolitan area.
The Autonomous University of Mexico, UNAM, began to be interested in the 2014 Solar Decathlon in Versailles, France, in response to an initiative led by a student R&D group in the Faculty of Architecture and the Industrial Design Research Centre. The engineering faculty and arts school quickly joined the project too.
CASA aims to be a resilient, symbiotic and regenerative solution for the housing problems in the Valle de México’s metropolitan area. Resilient because it adapts to the needs of its inhabitants thanks to its modular construction system. Symbiotic because it enables organic interaction between the environment and human beings; finally, CASA not only wants to regenerate the urban landscape, but also to help rebuild the social fabric, starting in the context where the house is to be built.
To build the prototype (which will be erected in the Sciences & Arts Museum in the Architecture faculty at the end of this year), CASA is supported by public and private organisations such as CONUEE (the National Commission for Efficient Energy Use), Pro Mexico, the Association of Companies for Energy Savings in Building, Panel Rey, SoluTex, Modeca, CIHAC, (the Centre for the Promotion of Construction & Housing AC), together with several others.
The countries competing in the 2014 Solar Decathlon are the USA, Germany, Japan, France, Spain, Italy, Romania, Switzerland, Denmark, the Netherlands, India, Thailand, Taiwan and, from Latin America, Costa Rica, Chile and Mexico (Brazil took part in the 2010 event in Madrid). The first Asian event, in Datong, in China, will take place in 2013, called Solar Decathlon China (SDCH).
