Ingeteam will supply Iberdrola its largest lithium-ion battery storage system in the world, which will provide back-up power to the UK’s biggest onshore wind farm at Whitelee near Glasgow. Developed by Scottish Power Renewables, the system will have a storage capacity of 50 MWh, equivalent to the average hourly power consumption of 150,000 homes.
Ingeteam is to supply the control system, the power converters and the lithium-ion batteries. The main purpose of the facility is always to provide the wind farm with greater management over the energy it delivers to the grid. With the type of storage system to be installed at the Whitelee wind farm, Iberdrola will be able to take part in the frequency regulation market of the UK national grid. It will also offer other functionalities, such as guaranteeing the supply capacity, by performing an optimal balance between generation and consumption, in addition to enabling the wind farm to be commissioned with its grid powered down and isolated from the main grid.
The plant is expected to come online at the end of this year, with testing concluded in Q1 2021, to ensure compliance with the TSO grid code (UK’s electric system operator). The control systems and power converters covered by this contract will be based on the Ingeteam Group’s in-house technology and manufactured at its newly opened plant in Ortuella (Bizkaia).
