The rise of environmental awareness coupled with the recent economic crisis has accentuated the importance of both energy and economic efficiency in every type of public and private installation and infrastructure. Fortunately, in the case of the lighting sector in general and street lighting in particular, this awareness of the energy problem has brought about a favourable and transcendental moment from a technological standpoint.
Two new lines of technological development have come together at this time: SSL technology (Solid State Lighting), commonly known as LED, which is already a reality in our homes, at work and is starting to gain visibility in our cities’ streets, as well as the extraordinary development of information and communication technologies (ICTs) which has more recently turned the concept of the Internet of Things (IoT) into a reality.
These two lines of technological development have converged in the lighting sector into what we call smart lighting, which is not only capable of generating and controlling light in a more appropriate manner, but is also able to interact with other systems that are related or not to the lighting, with the
