Spain: world wind power champion

Spanish wind power deserves congratulations: the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA) has decided to grant Spain the European Wind Energy Award for being the first country in the world where wind has becomes the first source of electricity over an entire year.
“Spain deserves the European Wind Energy Award for its success story. It has been a pioneer in wind and has developed a winning industry with global leaders among its companies. These enterprises have made ​​it possible for wind power to be the primary source of electricity for Spaniards in 2013 and the world’s first to do so”, says the EWEA.
The award ceremony took place on 12 March in Barcelona, ​​at Europe’s largest wind power Conference, EWEA 2014. According to 2013 figures from the system operator, Red Eléctrica de España (REE), coverage of demand with wind power was 20.9%, with the highest annual production in history: 54,478 GWh.
