The process of decarbonising economic activity is essential for the sustainability of the planet and, increasingly, for the very continuity of energy intensive companies. Thermal energy, in particular, is difficult to decarbonise in an economically competitive way. Each case requires the application of specific solutions, which not only depend on the industrial process, but also on the physical environment in which that process is situated.

Indeed, there is scant availability of environmentally neutral energy resources and, depending on these resources, the design of the solutions for their application varies wildly, as well as their investment cost, operational needs and economic efficiency.

Moreover, a large part of heat intensive industry has opted for CHP via natural gas and, to a lesser extent, fuel oil, to bring down their energy costs. Many of these plants are now reaching the end of their service life and industries will have to decide whether to renovate them (signing up for the expected auctions scheduled for the second half of 2021); resize them to operate under a self-consumption mode; or incorporate biofuel-based solutions (that may also be compatible with CHP).

The solutions are so wide-ranging and the technologies to apply so diverse, it is only thanks to the assessment of companies such as AESA that an objective, comprehensive and reliable vision can be achieved of the applicable alternatives and of the outcomes and conditioning factors arising from each.
