The process of decarbonising the economic activity is vital for the sustainability of the planet and, increasingly, for the very continuity of energy intensive companies. Thermal energy, in particular, is extremely difficult to decarbonise in an economically competitive way. Each case requires the application of specific solutions that not only depend on the industrial process, but also on the physical environment in which that process is situated.

Efectivamente, la disponibilidad de recursos energéticos medioambientalmente neutros es escasa y, según sean estos recursos, el diseño de las soluciones para su aplicación será completamente diferente, así como su coste de inversión, sus necesidades de operación y su eficacia económica.

Gran parte de la industria térmicamente intensiva se ha apoyado en la cogeneración con gas natural y, en menor medida, con fuelóleo, para reducir sus costes energéticos. Muchas de estas plantas están llegando hoy al final de su vida útil y las industrias tendrán que decidirse por su renovación (acogiéndose a las esperadas subastas, o redimensionándolas para operar en modo de autoconsumo) o por la incorporación de soluciones basadas en biocombustibles (que pueden igualmente ser compatibles con la cogeneración)
