The tourism sector in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic

FuturENERGY April-May 2020

The tourism sector was the first to be affected by this pandemic. However, there is something of which we at the Hotel Technological Institute are very proud: how the hotel sector quickly reacted to offer its establishments to the healthcare system along with everything it needed, to create hotels fit for medical use as well as accommodation for both nursing staff and those personnel who found themselves working away from their homes.

Ours is an extremely important sector for the Spanish economy, as it accounts for 12 – 14% of domestic GDP, and this is why we merit the closest attention to overcome the crisis caused by the virus. Accommodation establishments, which have been compelled to close by law, must get ready so that they can reopen their doors as quickly as possible to start operating again. This is why, and taking into account that we must first be in a situation that is resolved in medical terms, we have to generate confidence so that foreign tourists return to Spanish destinations. This solution should be coordinated at European level.
